My husband, son, and I have had several really good vacations.
Niagara Falls, NYC, Grand Canyon/Vegas, Disney, beach trips, Colorado, cruise, just to name a few.
A few other good ones were had by just the two of us before our son was born.
Since our son is grown (at least to him) and in college and doesn't want to go with dear ole Mom and Dad any longer, we decided to make shorter trips. Trips that are more for seeing real life places rather than "doing" things at commercial attractions designed for entertainment.
Another way to put that is "old people vacations".
We decided to see more of our neighboring state of Mississippi.
First stop, Tupelo via the Natchez Trace Parkway.
These guitars are all over the town.
Tupelo, MS is the home of Elvis Presley.
I like "young Elvis", but I am not crazy for him.
I insisted that we visit his childhood home - much to Hubby's dismay.
He wanted to just drive by.
Nope.
Up next . . .
The King's Birthplace in Tupelo.

That is a really interesting story about Elvis. Can't wait to see your next post. Have a super week!
i like "old people get-a-ways"!! we have been taking short trips, two nights, three days. places we can drive to = less stress. just pack er' up and take your time, really enjoy the ride!!
cool story about elvis, i was glad i was able to read it. i have old people eyes!!
I like old people vacations. You get to see what's closer to home, and I've found some fun things I never knew were here. I lived in Jackson, TN for 3 years, even drove by Tupelo on my way to Birmingham once, but never explored. One day I'll go back. Nice post!
Hi Amy,
What an exciting post! Thanks so much for sharing...and I am looking forward to Part 2!
I love the top photo...I can't wait to see more of your trip.
Nice and interesting photos!
I love your photos, and your blog. Thanks so much for commenting on our 2daughters,1mother, 3cameras post.
You got some really neat pictures! We did 'grand' trips like that before we had kids, but now with 3 boys under 5 and a very tight budget, we stick within a 6 hour drive for our vacations. It's been a lot of fun though!
i saw the birthplace first since i am behind in comments. i could spend a whole day standing in front of that building in the first photo. this is our favorite vacation. we have never done any of the ones you listed, but ours have all been like the one today. we love old towns and new places in USA to visit since we don't do crowds.
LOL, I never thought of it as "old people" vacations! I'd take 4 of these over 1 neon lit trip!
Love that old building in your first photo! It's awesome! I don't much like the "entertainment" type places, either. I'd rather enjoy scenery and see historic sites. But since I have a young daughter, I know I'll be visiting the entertainment spots. :-)
Definitely my kind of road trip! I'm on a quest right now to photograph some 77 historic courthouses in Texas. If this one were a bit closer I'd certainly want to add it to my list. Gorgeous!
What a great plaque about Elvis' first guitar! No, sometimes shorter trips are the best ones! We often overlook what is closer to home!
We have driven past the exit but never had time to stop. Our trips south are always to visit family and we seldom get to sightsee. Perhaps, someday.
Love that old building in the first shot. What character it has.
I like the idea of the guitars. I have seen similar items in other cities. Peanuts in Dothan, horses in Louisville, butterflies in St. Louis, giant letter O's in Omaha to name a few.
