The Barn Collective #27

This is one of my favorite barns from a few years ago.  One day the pretty rusty roof had been painted or replaced.

We have been home from the hospital for a few days now.  My husband had a partial hip replacement due to the cancer going there.  The hip surgery went as expected, but there were lung  complications and we ended up staying a week longer than expected.  He is better now.

Thanks everyone, for the well wishes.

The Barn Collective #26

Appleton, Tennessee, U. S. A.

This is a repost from a few years ago.  I am not able to keep up much these days.  My husband has been in the hospital for over a week.  I hope to be able to get back soon to whatever our normal is these days.

Thanks for hanging with me!

The Barn Collective #22

This was taken in January 2011 when north Alabama had a foot of snow.  I think we measured 9 inches at our place.  The barn belongs to my mother, but is adjacent to our property.  That is my hubby on the tractor.  I rarely use artsy treatments now and could not tell you what I did to this shot.

We have had a snow and/or ice storm each of the last three weeks here, but I only got a couple of iPhone shots just for the record.  The past week's winter storm was all ice and sleet and stayed around for longer than one day.  I like a snow or two every winter, but three in a row is too much.  I don't see how you folks up north stand it for months at a time.

We are supposed to be in the upper sixties next week with rain.  I hate to complain, but that's getting kinda warm for me.  We go from one extreme to another.

Some are in great shape, but this one above has some wear.

Others were in much better shape.

Windsor Ruins, near Port Gibson / Alcorn, Mississippi, U. S. A.

What an awesome experience to stand next to these huge pillars and imagine what it must have been like to live in a home such as this.  The home survived the Civil War by being occupied by the Union Army, just to burn down in 1890 from a carelessly thrown cigarette.

The sky was disappointing the day we were there, but the websites below have some better shots.

Old Courthouse Museum, Vicksburg, Mississippi

We took a short trip to Vicksburg and Natchez, Mississippi in December.  The Old Courthouse Museum in Vicksburg has a lot of history and memorabilia.  Visit if you can.

Happy Birthday, Robert E. Lee

Old Sheldon Church Ruins

Once again, I post something very old and beautiful that is definitely not rubbish.

Old Sheldon Church Ruins, near Beaufort, South Carolina.
I have included the Wikipedia link, but I recommend Googling it as there are several other informative sites about the ruins.

Idyllic

Got it all here.
Rural, old, architecture, abandoned, fence, church, blue sky

Sometimes we avoid the interstate going back and forth to Nashville.
We found this gem this week.

Abandoned foundry

Abandoned U. S. Pipe / foundry along Interstate 24
Chattanooga, Tennessee, U. S. A.

I've always wanted to get photos of this abandoned property.
Finally, I wasn't driving and remembered to get the camera ready as we whizzed by on the interstate.
I would love to get in there and explore.

Corn, barley, and rye

My husband and I wanted to take a day trip before he starts more chemo.  We went to Lynchburg, Tennessee, the home of the Jack Daniel Distillery.  Jack Daniel's is the highest selling American whiskey in the world.  We had been on the tour before, and have been to Lynchburg a few times, but it is a good day trip and not too long a drive.

In our tour group of about 15 people, there were folks from Canada, Venezuela, Pennsylvania, and three men from southern California who were there to purchase a batch of select single barrel.

I don't remember all the details about the process and could not hear the tour guide very well much of the time.  Plus, I'm just not that interested so my attention span wasn't very good.
I was more into to looking than listening.

The packaging room was the only indoor building where we were allowed to take photos.  We lucked up and got there just as they were starting to package a special Single Barrel batch.

Bottle filling

This special batch gets a brass tag on each bottle.

The single barrel is the barrel at the topmost location in one of the 80 plus barrel warehouses in the town of Lynchburg.  Something about the conditions at the top of the warehouse make that whiskey special.

You too, can have your own select single barrel bottled for a mere $12,000.  I believe the guide said that is 400 bottles . . .  I may have that wrong.  It doesn't sound like enough money per bottle.

The above is the furnace where those Sugar Maple wood pallets are turned into the charcoal which is used for removing impurities from the product.

The Jack Daniel Distillery is in Moore County, Tennessee, which is a dry county.
You can't legally buy alcoholic beverages anywhere in the county.
However, there are hundreds of thousands of gallons of whiskey in the county at any given time.

The Moore County Tennessee Courthouse.

For those of you who are wondering . . .  yes, we did eat lunch at Miss Mary Bobo's.  For those of you who do not know, Miss Bobo's is a family style "restaurant" in an old boarding house owned by the Jack Daniel Distillery.  Reservations are coveted, especially on weekends, mostly for the experience. The experience is a good one, as you get to eat family style around a large table with a hostess and ten or so strangers.  Our table mates were good ones, also from around the U. S.
I can recommend it for the experience, but not necessarily for the food.
Credit card required to make a reservation.
Yep, even the 3-digit code on the back.
They are proud of what they have to offer.
The distillery tour is free unless you want the tasting tour, which I believe, is $10/person.
