Clouds and crepes and coffee and why

This has been a sad week.

The life of a twenty-two year old ended tragically a few days ago.  She was the daughter of a friend of mine.

The daughter of a friend of our family was inside a bar where a gunman opened fire in Tuscaloosa, Alabama this week.  She was not injured physically, but people at her table were.

We will never know why these things happened.

So much sadness this week. Another symptom of a fallen world - sin, hurt, pain, etc. So many desperate people. Life is so fragile.

Your refusal to Google the 'why' of crepes, reminds me of my firm belief that the origin of the word sabotage stemmed from [wikipedia:That it derives from the Netherlands in the 15th century when workers would throw their sabots (wooden shoes) into the wooden gears of the textile looms to break the cogs, fearing the automated machines would render the human workers obsolete]

Isn't that a great etymology!! It was only last year that I was told that was an urban myth and didn't have any basis in fact. Excuse me?? It was such a great story, that I'm stickin' to it! ;-)

For once someone ask a question that I think I know the answer to without having to resort to google.

Amy, you are right. It is for the crepe like the ones we eat but inspired by the bark and not the flower which also happens to be curly. Following is story of how I learned this tid-bit of info.

My MIL was named Myrtle and she liked to believe the tree was named for her or vise-a -versa. For many years I subscribed to Southern Living magazine. I once found an article about this tree and give it to my MIL.

Seems this tree was native to China and made its way to England. But, the UK was not hot enough so the tree would not bloom. A royal botanist sent the tree to a friend in Charleston, SC and it went wild with blooms and became the souths favorite tree. The name however comes from the french and is derived from a latin word meaning "Curled." Mature crepe myrtle trees shed a thin flakey bark that reminded the french of their Crepe's.

First, my deepest condolences on the loss you and your loved ones have experienced. Just horrific. The world is getting to be a scary place.

We just moved into our home in March, but the crepe myrtles have been here quite some time. When it storms (which is frequently lately) the white ones shed their blooms easily and the falling blooms mimics snowfall. Very cool! I've never liked white crepes until now.

Amy, I am so sorry for the loss and sadness you are experiencing this week. My prayers go out to you and the families.
We don't have crepe myrtles here so I don't know anything about them.

Amy, I owe you a big apology I got so excited about knowing something about the crepe myrtles that I overlooked leaving my condolences on the lost of your friends. Sudden lost of someone so young can be the most traumatic grieving process. I will keep all of you in prayer.

I am so sorry to hear about this incident. I don't understand all this violence. I'm commenting after the Aurora, CO shootings. It all makes me ill.

Great question re the crepe myrtle. Your explanation sounds like a good one. I will subscribe to it. ;)
