Hellen Keller's birthplace is less than an hour away and I have never been there.
Our son went on an elementary class trip years ago, but my husband went with him since he works nearby.

That is not how I envisioned Helen Keller's home. It's quite grand! I visit landmarks in and near town frequently. We are not able to take vacations right now so we do a lot of short day trips.
That's a pretty place- love the brick pavers. Not so much on landmarks, but I do visit parks and museums
You know the only times I visit places of interest near our home is when out of state family and friends come to visit. Why is that? Maybe it is something I should change.

What wonderful photos to show this lovely home! I suspect most of us are guilty of ignoring those 'famous' spots near our homes. Our lives just get too busy and then we're going on vacation to look at outher 'famous' spots near someone elses home. Hmmmmm
beautiful home. and yes, i have been to every attraction with in 30 mile radius and there are lots of them here. and most of them been there many times.
we have 5 state parks within 15 miles of us, 3 of them only 5 miles. preserves and museums and Jungle Gardens and Selby gardens. i live in tourist country and have seen them all.
The resting place of Florence Thompson is right up the road from me. Florence was the subject in the famous Migrant Mother portrait taken by Dorothea Lang in during the Great Depression.

I think we all tend to skip over attractions that are close to home. It only seems like an adventure when we're on a trip to faraway places.

Not like I should and I think it's sad that we skip our local stuff. I went to Ivy Green when I was younger but can't remember with who. Seems like it was a school field trip but if you haven't been, I guess it wasn't!
I'd love to visit this place. We do go to historic sites and events near us, just never make it to north Alabama!
