I enjoy doing macros with a series of apertures and seeing the different depths of field or DOF.
The wider (smaller f number) your shutter opening (aperture), the more shallow the focus will be.
This is not a perfect study because I did not use a tripod and you can see I did have varying distances in these since I was holding the camera.
The lens was maybe 1 foot away from the group of flowers.
I thought my focus point was consistent, but evidently I missed it on the first shot.
Auto ISO
No flash
SOOC jpg No adjustment other than reduce for web
I forget my flower anatomy, but those white tips on the ?stamen? of the azalea always get my attention.
Maybe I need to get a microscope.
I think I like the f3.5 better.
Which shot is your favorite?

Those are amazing photos! Are those silver tipped things called the stamens? I forget my plant knowledge too. Beautiful pics!
Stunning...beautiful!
Beautiful. I do like the f3.5 the best also. I really envy people who are brave enough to explore and learn about those manual settings.
AMAZING! i LOVE it! Thank you for following! It was very sweet of you to. Thanks again!

I saw your link on Weekly Top Shot. Lovely flower pictures.
The last one is my favorite.
Beautiful flowers. While each shot is awesome, I think I like the third one the best.
I love the color of the azaleas.
Happy Sunday!
This is a great post. Helps us all become better photographers! I think I like f3.5 or f5 the best... nice and sharp with blurry, soft background. Nicely done!
These are gorgeous photos, Amy! You did a fantastic job. Beautiful color!
I have to agree with you - I like the f3.5 the best too...loved the DOF on that one! And the color was very nice - such a soft pink!
Very nice series of macros. I like the 3.5 one the best. Nice clear focus on the bloom n nice amount of blurr in the background. I use that aperture setting for all my macros!
I'm with you, I think the 3.5 is a nice combination of sharpness and blurred background. Those stamens are amazing. BTW, whenever I post a photo on my blog with a lot of blurred background my sister has to email me and tell me that my photo is out of focus and then I have to explain it to her again. I think I'll start barring her from my blog :).
I need to do more of these. I am such a lazy photographer, I tend to stay with the same type of settings. I find one that I like and stick with it. I have to agree I do like the 3.5
SO beautiful those azaleas... I too like to adjust my settings and see what I can get out of my camera. Thank you Amy for sharing on Weekly Top Shot...
I'm drawn to the f5.0 -- but they are all lovely. :)

Very pretty even though I don't understand all the photo tech stuff! Just curious, what time of the day did you take these?
Beautiful blossoms to practice on! I like doing studies such as this.
Very nice series and experimenting with the camera settings. I really need to do more of that.
I think I like the f5.0-1/200-ISO200. It seems to have the best blend of focus in the foreground and bokah in the background. Now just a little tweaking in PhotoShop Elements and you'll have something suitable for framing. Nice work.
Lovely work. I think I also prefer the 3.5. Interesting to se them side by side.
Gorgeous shots! Happy RT2!
Mine's here.
These are so lovely!
